PESHAWAR, Pakistan –Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sohail Afridi has been nominated to take over as the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The decision, reportedly issued directly by PTI founder Imran Khan, follows the resignation of the incumbent CM, Ali Amin Gandapur.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja confirmed the development, stating that the change was mandated due to concerns over the worsening law and order and security situation in the province. Gandapur confirmed his resignation, calling the Chief Ministership “Imran Khan Sahib’s amaanat (entrustment),” which he was returning upon instruction.
Who is Sohail Afridi?
Sohail Afridi is a key figure within the PTI, known for his grassroots activism and long association with the party.Afridi is a first-time MPA, elected from constituency PK-70, Khyber-II. He previously held the portfolios of Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Communication and Works, and more recently, Provincial Minister for Higher Education. He is from the Khyber district, making him the first Chief Minister from the region since its merger with KP. He is a businessman by profession and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He was also the former President of the Insaf Students Federation (ISF) in KP.
His nomination signals a fresh political start for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with expectations that he will focus on improving security and addressing administrative challenges in the region.
