London: The UK recorded the largest increase in asylum applications across Europe in 2024, with over 108,000 claims—a 28% jump from 84,000 the previous year—according to OECD data. This contrasts sharply with declines in France and Germany, where applications fell due to stricter controls.

While overall European migration trends slowed, the UK’s rise is linked to global conflicts, wars, and political instability. Pakistan led with over 10,000 applicants, followed by Afghanistan and Iran at around 8,000 each.

The British government is considering new laws to curb illegal migration, but human rights groups criticize the tough policies for potentially violating asylum seekers’ rights.

Experts predict further increases in 2025, prompting calls for improved legal migration pathways. Across 38 OECD nations, total claims hit a record three million, with the US topping the list at 1.7 million.
