U.S. President Trump’s aspirations for the Nobel Peace Prize remain unfulfilled, as the award has been bestowed upon Venezuelan human rights activist Maria Corina Machado.
Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace in Venezuela. She becomes the 12th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Peace Committee stated that Machado is receiving the prize for her struggle to promote democratic rights for Venezuelan citizens and to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
The committee emphasized that Maria Corina meets the criteria outlined in Alfred Nobel’s will for Peace Prize laureates. She has united Venezuela’s opposition and mounted strong resistance against the militarization of Venezuelan society.
The Nobel Peace Committee further noted that Maria has remained steadfast in her support for a peaceful transition to democracy.
Maria Corina Machado is a Venezuelan opposition politician. She served as an elected member of Venezuela’s National Assembly from 2011 to 2014. In 2018, she was included in the BBC’s list of 100 Women. She is also known as the “Iron Lady” and raised her voice for free and fair elections 20 years ago.
It is noteworthy that more than 300 individuals were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. According to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, a total of 338 nominations include 244 individuals and 94 organizations, marking a significant increase from the 286 nominations last year.
