Punjab Government Cracks Down on Gatherings Amid Heightened Security Concerns

The Punjab government has immediately enforced Section 144 across the province to maintain law and order.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, Section 144 has been imposed in the province for a period of 10 days.

The notification specifies that Section 144 applies to gatherings of four or more individuals. It will be enforced in public places, streets, neighborhoods, and open fields where four or more people assemble.

The restrictions do not apply to prayers, weddings, funerals, offices, or courts. Additionally, a complete ban has been imposed on the display of arms throughout the province.

The provincial Home Department stated that public gatherings and the use of loudspeakers are fully prohibited.

On the other hand, IG Punjab Dr. Usman has directed enhanced security measures in Lahore and across the province.

IG Punjab Dr. Usman instructed that security be ensured at mosques, imambargahs, shrines, and important sites. He directed DPOs and senior police officers to visit local mosques on the occasion of Jumu’ah prayers.

IG Punjab further stated that police officers should listen to citizens’ issues in mosques after Friday prayers. It is noteworthy that mobile and internet services have also been suspended in Islamabad and Rawalpindi today, and they will remain suspended for an indefinite period.
