The Sakurajima volcano, located on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu, erupted again with multiple explosions, resulting in heavy clouds of smoke and ash rising up to 4.4 kilometers.
Due to continuous ash fall, at least 30 flights had to be canceled.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the first major explosion occurred at 1:00 AM, followed by two more explosions at 2:30 AM and 8:50 AM.
This is the first time in nearly 13 months that smoke plumes during an explosion have risen more than 4 kilometers.
Local media reported that dozens of incoming and outgoing flights from Kagoshima Airport were suspended due to ash fall and reduced visibility.
Reports indicate that after the recent eruption, the volcanic ash has moved northeast, leading to forecasts of ash fall in Kagoshima and nearby Miyazaki prefectures.
Sakurajima is considered one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, with intermittent explosions being a regular occurrence. In 2019, this volcano had ejected smoke and ash up to 5.5 kilometers into the atmosphere.
