A pilot died on Sunday after two light aircraft collided in mid-air near Wedderburn Airfield in Sydney’s southwest and one of the planes crashed into bushland.

Police said the collision occurred shortly after noon. One aircraft plunged into nearby scrub and caught fire, killing the sole pilot on board. Rescue teams later recovered the body from the wreckage.

The second plane landed safely at the airfield and its pilot was unharmed.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has begun an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Authorities have sealed off the crash site and the airfield as crime scenes.
