The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is commemorating its 58th Foundation Day today with district-level ceremonies across the country and a central public gathering in Karachi’s Korangi area.
Preparations for the Korangi rally are in full swing, with party flags hoisted across the city. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other central and provincial leaders will address the event.
Founded on 30 November 1967 in Lahore by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the PPP rose to prominence with its iconic slogan “Roti, Kapra aur Makaan” and secured a landslide victory in West Pakistan in the 1970 elections.
Over its 58-year journey, the party has faced severe challenges during the Zia and Musharraf regimes while achieving historic milestones including the unanimous 1973 Constitution, laying the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme and granting provincial autonomy.
In his Foundation Day message, President Asif Ali Zardari stated that the PPP has always stood at the forefront against dictatorship, led the struggle for restoration of democracy and worked tirelessly to strengthen democratic institutions and political reconciliation.
Sindh Minister and PPP Karachi President Saeed Ghani said the party opened the doors of politics to the common man, breaking the monopoly of feudal lords and capitalists, adding that the day will be celebrated with full enthusiasm.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab remarked that the PPP’s bond with the people has remained unbreakable and will continue in the future.
