Islamabad: Pakistan has decided to cancel 21 liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes under a long-term contract with Italy’s Eni, due to a massive gas surplus overwhelming the network.
Sources in the Petroleum Division say Pakistan LNG Limited (PLL) has a monthly cargo agreement with Eni. The cancellations include 11 planned for 2026 (down from 12) and 10 for 2027, keeping only January shipments in both years and December 2027 to meet winter peaks.
Eni’s last delivery was on January 3, 2025, after 12 in 2024. No further 2025 cargoes are expected.
The move follows a request from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and uses contract flexibility. Pakistan is also negotiating with Qatar to defer or resell extra volumes from their 120 annual cargoes deal.
The surplus stems from reduced demand due to solar energy growth and lower industrial use. Pakistan is selling excess gas at discounts, cutting local production, and exploring offshore storage. Eni, PLL, SNGPL, and the ministry did not comment.
