The government has approved the Wheat Policy 2025-26, aimed at ensuring fair prices for farmers and securing strategic reserves to protect food security.
A high-level meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, was held to finalize the policy. It was decided that farmers would receive fair compensation under the new policy, with the government purchasing strategic wheat stocks to ensure stable reserves and farmer protection.
The meeting was attended by the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan, a representative of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and relevant stakeholders.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that Pakistan is an agrarian economy, with wheat being a crop of critical importance. “Wheat is not only the staple food for Pakistanis but also the largest source of income for our farmers,” he said. He added that the government is fully aware of the challenges farmers face and is making every effort to ensure their welfare, recognizing farmers as the backbone of Pakistan’s economy.
The Prime Minister noted that the federal government conducted an extensive consultation process with all stakeholders, including provincial governments, farmer organizations, industrialists, and the farming community, to formulate the policy. “We are announcing the National Wheat Policy 2025-26 based on this consensus,” he stated.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that the policy aims to protect public interests while ensuring farmers’ profitability. He commended the provincial governments for their cooperation in crafting a consensus-based policy, expressing confidence that it will promote agricultural growth. The policy, he added, will boost farmers’ income and play a vital role in ensuring food security for the Pakistani people.
During the briefing, officials informed the Prime Minister that federal and provincial governments will procure approximately 6.2 million tons of wheat for the 2025-26 crop season at Rs3,500 per maund, aligned with international import prices. This move will ensure fair prices and profits for farmers while maintaining market competitiveness. The policy also eliminates restrictions on inter-provincial wheat movement to ensure availability across Pakistan.
It was further briefed that the Federal Minister for National Food Security will chair a national committee to oversee wheat policy implementation, with representatives from all provinces. The committee will hold weekly meetings and report directly to the Prime Minister to ensure coordination and compliance.
The policy underscores the government’s commitment to providing fair prices to farmers, securing sufficient wheat stocks, and safeguarding both farmers and national food reserves.
