Islamabad: Pakistan and Afghanistan played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw in their third AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier match at Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad, on Thursday.

The Green Shirts started with high energy, launching frequent attacks in the first half, but Afghanistan’s resolute defense held firm, thwarting Pakistan’s attempts to score.

Despite dominating possession, Pakistan struggled to convert their chances against Afghanistan’s well-organized backline.

A prime opportunity arose in the 67th minute when Pakistan were awarded a penalty, but Otis Khan’s effort was saved, leaving the scoreline unchanged.

Fans appreciated the spirited performance from both sides, applauding the competitive display in a tightly contested match.

Pakistan’s Group E campaign has been challenging, with the team suffering defeats in their opening two matches. On March 25, they lost 2-0 to Syria at Prince Abdullah Bin Jalawi Stadium in Saudi Arabia, with Ahmad Faqa scoring in the 23rd minute, assisted by Amar Ramadan, and Omar Alsoma adding a second in the 56th minute. Despite a strong defensive effort, Pakistan couldn’t match Syria’s experience.

In their second match on June 10, Pakistan fell 1-0 to Myanmar at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon. Than Paing’s accurate free-kick in the 42nd minute proved the difference, as Pakistan’s defensive approach failed to yield an equalizer despite late pressure.

Following the draw against Afghanistan, Pakistan now head to Kuwait to face the same opponents in their next Group E match on October 14.

The top team from each group will secure qualification for the AFC Asian Cup 2027, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia.
