The third and potentially decisive round of negotiations between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban aimed at preventing terrorism began in Istanbul on Thursday.
Sources indicate a strong possibility of finalizing the mechanism for implementing and monitoring the ceasefire during this session. The talks, mediated by Turkey and Qatar, are being led on the Pakistani side by ISI Director General Lieutenant General Asim Malik, while the Taliban delegation is headed by intelligence chief Abdul Haq Wasiq.
The Taliban team includes Deputy Interior Minister Rahmatullah Najib, Taliban ambassador in Doha Suhail Shaheen, Anas Haqqani, Abdul Qahar Balkhi, and Zakir Jalali.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that Pakistan has only one demand: an end to terrorism from Afghan soil. He said talks are held only when progress is possible, otherwise it is a waste of time. He expressed hope that the Taliban will act wisely and ensure peace in the region.
The previous round held in Istanbul on October 25 failed, with no written assurance obtained on Pakistan’s demand. An initial ceasefire agreement was reached in Doha on October 19, which remains fragile so far.
Sources say a joint statement is expected by evening.
