Karachi’s newly operational e-challan system has proven impartial, issuing fines to traffic police vehicles caught violating rules through advanced surveillance cameras.
Traffic police officials reported that over the past 24 hours, eight police mobile vans were penalized under the digital system, bringing the cumulative total to 68 since its launch.
Authorities noted that the count stood at 60 until yesterday, but with the mechanism gaining full momentum, detections of infractions are occurring at a faster pace. The violations primarily involve failures to adhere to seatbelt mandates and mobile phone usage while driving.
The traffic police emphasized that the e-challan framework applies equally to civilians and official vehicles, with no exceptions planned for future enforcement. This development follows a broader rollout that has already issued thousands of fines citywide, including to government departments, amid efforts to modernize road safety.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, commenting on the system, described such measures as challenging yet essential for public welfare, stating that difficult decisions are made with the ultimate goal of benefiting citizens.
The initiative, integrated with the Safe City Authority’s cameras, aims to curb longstanding issues like corruption in manual fining and promote accountability across the board.
