At least ten Afghan nationals were killed by Iranian border guards in western Farah province when security forces opened fire on a group attempting to cross illegally into Iran, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesman Maulvi Mohammad Naseem Badri told international media that all deceased were residents of Farah who were shot while trying to breach the border. Two additional individuals remain unaccounted for, with no further details released.

Iranian police described the incident as a response to unauthorized entry attempts. The shooting marks another deadly episode amid heightened border enforcement since early 2025, during which Tehran has deported thousands of Afghan nationals and issued ultimatums to undocumented migrants to leave the country.

Despite the crackdown, hundreds of Afghans continue daily attempts to enter Iran seeking work and escape from widespread poverty and unemployment under Taliban rule. Such crossings frequently turn tragic due to harsh terrain, extreme weather, and heavy-handed security measures.
