India created history by clinching their maiden ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a high-voltage final at DY Patil Stadium.
Batting first, India posted 298/7 in 50 overs. Shafali Verma top-scored with 87 off 78 balls, Deepti Sharma made 58, and Smriti Mandhana contributed 45. South Africa’s Ayabonga Khaka took 3 wickets.
Chasing 299, South Africa were bowled out for 246. Captain Laura Wolvaardt fought valiantly with 101, but lacked support. Annerie Dercksen (35) and Suné Luus (25) were the next best. Deepti Sharma starred with the ball, claiming 5/39, while Shafali took 2 wickets.
This is India’s first Women’s World Cup triumph. South Africa, despite reaching their first final, fell short once again after the 2022 T20 World Cup loss.
