India has reactivated its embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital, marking a significant step in resuming full diplomatic operations after a four-year closure.
According to Indian media, India will appoint a Charge d’Affaires to head the mission initially, followed by the deployment of an ambassador. In response, the Taliban government plans to send two diplomats to New Delhi by November.
India had shut down the embassy in August 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul. However, in June 2022, a technical mission was established with security assurances to handle trade, medical aid, and humanitarian efforts.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs clarified that the embassy will enhance India’s role in Afghanistan’s comprehensive development, humanitarian assistance, and capacity-building projects, aligned with the aspirations of Afghan society.
This development follows the announcement earlier this month by Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar during talks with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi—the first visit by a Taliban leader to India since 2021.
Notably, India has yet to formally recognize the Taliban government, despite operating embassies in Kabul by countries like China, Russia, Pakistan, and Turkey, with only Moscow granting official recognition.
