Technology giant Google has launched a new video editing option for Google Drive, enabling users to perform simple edits without leaving the cloud storage site.
The upgrade allows Workspace domain users to edit directly while watching a video that has been stored in Drive. A purple Google Vids icon will now pop up on the top-right part of the playback window, as indicated by the company. A click on the icon will open the video in Google Vids, where users can cut clips, add background music, add text overlays and perform other basic edits.

The action follows a wider Google plan to transform Drive from an archival service and bring it closer to productivity applications. Over the past few months, the platform added auto-captioning, revamped visuals, instant playback for fresh-uploaded videos, timestamped transcripts, and even thumbnail previews à la YouTube.
Industry observers comment that Google is more and more positioning Drive as a workspace center where not only are files stored, but they are processed and shared in real time. Adding video editing, they assert, is an indication of the expanding desire for lightweight browser-based tools that need not involve third-party software installations.
Nevertheless, the feature has constraints. Google affirmed that the editing capability will be limited to MP4, QuickTime, OGG and WebM file formats. In addition, videos should not be longer than 35 minutes or larger than 4GB in size. The edited copy is saved as a standalone Vids file, which one can opt to save to Drive or export elsewhere.
Though rollout of the feature is anticipated to happen gradually,Workspace domain users will initially gain access before expanding to individual accounts. “We want to make video editing as seamless as creating a document or a presentation in Drive,” said a Google spokesperson as quoted in foreign technology media outlets.

The integration is viewed as a potential threat to simple editing software and mobile apps, especially for professionals and educators who already use Drive for collaboration. By integrating editing tools into the platform itself, Google hopes to eliminate the reliance on outside applications and simplify workflows.
Given that video content remains the online communication powerhouse, the update represents a strong stride toward making Google’s ecosystem more adaptable. How much the restrictions on size and length might influence user adoption, though, is anyone’s guess.
