The Norwegian Nobel Committee, responsible for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize, held its final meeting on Monday to decide the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Nobel Institute confirmed on Thursday that the announcement will be made today. According to the committee, the decision on the award recipient was finalized before the recent ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who has been vocal about his role in pushing for the Israel-Hamas agreement, has repeatedly claimed eligibility for the Nobel Peace Prize. He recently stated that failing to award him the prize would be an “insult to America.”
The Nobel Institute clarified that the Gaza peace deal had no impact on the selection process for the award.
Erik Aasheim, a spokesperson for the Nobel Institute, told the French news agency AFP that the committee’s final meeting on Monday was decisive. The five-member Nobel Committee typically finalizes its decision days or weeks in advance, with only final approval given before the announcement.
Trump Will Not Win Nobel Prize However, Nobel Prize expert and historian Asle Sveen stated that Trump will not receive the award this year, expressing “100 percent confidence” in his assessment.
Sveen further noted that Trump’s authorization of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and provision of substantial military aid escalated the conflict rather than fostering peace.
