Peshawar (Special Correspondent) – October 8, 2025
In a dramatic turn of events in Pakistan’s political landscape, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has announced his resignation from office, citing direct instructions from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The move, aimed at addressing escalating internal party rifts and the worsening security situation in the province, paves the way for Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sohail Afridi to assume the role of the new Chief Minister. Gandapur has pledged his unwavering support to Afridi, emphasizing unity within PTI ranks to ensure stable governance.
Gandapur, who assumed office on March 2, 2024, following PTI’s victory in the provincial elections, made the announcement via a statement on his official Facebook page and during a press briefing in Peshawar. “On the directives of Quaid Imran Khan, I am stepping down as Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he stated. “This decision is in the best interest of the party and the province. I will extend my full cooperation to the new leadership to strengthen PTI’s resolve and deliver on our commitments to the people of KP.” The resignation comes amid mounting concerns over rising terrorism incidents in the province, which Imran Khan highlighted as a primary factor in the leadership change. PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja confirmed the development earlier in the day, addressing journalists in Rawalpindi. “Imran Khan has personally decided on this transition, expressing deep worry over the deteriorating law and order situation in KP and internal divisions within the party,” Raja said. He added that Afridi’s nomination ensures a seamless handover, with Gandapur’s resignation to be formally submitted to the provincial assembly for approval, followed by Afridi’s election as the new CM.
