Islamabad: Pakistan has significantly strengthened its international digital infrastructure with the successful commissioning of the SEA-ME-WE 6 (South East Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 6) submarine cable system, connecting the country directly from Singapore to France through multiple landing points.
According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the 19,200-kilometre high-capacity fibre network offers over 100 terabits per second total capacity and delivers ultra-low latency connectivity across South-East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
The consortium behind the project includes Trans World Associates (Pakistan), Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, Bharti Airtel (India), Dhiraagu (Maldives), Djibouti Telecom, Mobily (Saudi Arabia), Orange (France), Singtel (Singapore), Sri Lanka Telecom, Telecom Egypt, Telekom Malaysia, and Telin (Indonesia).
SEA-ME-WE 6 features double the capacity and more fibre pairs than previous systems, providing enhanced geographic route diversity, greater resilience through multiple landing points (including trans-Egypt routes), improved fault protection, and reduced network ownership costs for service providers.
Pakistan has been allocated a total of 13.2 Tbps on the cable, of which 4 Tbps has been immediately lit to expand international bandwidth. This upgrade will directly support cloud services, data centres, fintech, e-commerce, streaming platforms, and the broader digital economy.
The new cable adds substantial redundancy to Pakistan’s existing subsea infrastructure and positions the country as a stronger digital gateway between Asia and Europe, significantly improving internet speed, reliability, and future scalability.
