Astronomers have claimed to record lightning strikes on Mars for the first time in history.
According to international news agencies, NASA’s Perseverance rover — which landed on the Red Planet in 2021 to search for signs of ancient life — has been examining the Jezero Crater for the past four years.
The evidence of Martian lightning emerged from audio and electromagnetic data collected by the rover’s SuperCam instrument.
A French research team analysed 28 hours of microphone recordings gathered over more than two Martian years (approximately 1,374 Earth days) and concluded that electrical discharges are commonly linked to dust devils and dust storms.
Scientists are now hopeful that future missions will carry more sensitive cameras and dedicated atmospheric discharge detectors to confirm and further study these lightning events on Mars.
