Lahore: The Lahore High Court has fast-tracked a constitutional showdown, fixing December 5 as the date when a powerful three-member full bench will hear petitions demanding the immediate scrapping of the 27th Amendment.

Headed by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan and comprising Justices Jawad Hassan and Sultan Tanvir Ahmed, the bench — formed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum herself — will examine explosive claims that the amendment is nothing less than a “judicial assassination”:

  • Stripping the Supreme Court of its original jurisdiction
  • Creating a parallel Federal Constitutional Court widely seen as government-friendly
  • Establishing a “selection committee” dominated by the executive to pick judges
  • Bypassing provinces, bar councils, and civil society entirely

Petitioners, including senior lawyers and citizens, have urged the court to declare the amendment void ab initio and stay its implementation — including any appointments to the new court — until a final verdict.

With lawyers across Pakistan already on warpath and nationwide protests planned, the December 5 hearing is shaping up as the biggest constitutional battle since the 26th Amendment saga. One bench, one month, one decision that could either halt the government’s judicial overhaul in its tracks — or rewrite Pakistan’s power map forever.Mark the date. This one’s going to be loud.
