Islamabad: The federal government has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art international cricket stadium in Sector D-12, designed on the lines of Dubai’s iconic sports complexes, to permanently resolve the chronic traffic congestion witnessed during matches in the capital.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) to complete the project within one year. Located far from the city centre, the new stadium is expected to drastically reduce pressure on roads and eliminate the gridlock that has plagued Rawalpindi-Islamabad twin cities whenever Pakistan hosts international fixtures.

Sources say the complex will include a seven-star hotel to accommodate visiting teams, officials, and VIP guests, along with expansive parking zones, advanced security systems, and seamless transport links. The design will mirror Dubai Sports City standards, making it capable of hosting not just cricket but major global sporting events.

The decision comes as a major boost for Pakistan cricket, giving the country a third fully-equipped international venue alongside Lahore and Karachi, and ending Islamabad’s long wait for its own world-class cricket ground. Work on the project is set to begin shortly.
