While direct messaging (DM) is common on social media apps, ChatGPT will soon offer this capability as well.
OpenAI has rolled out a group messaging feature in ChatGPT, effectively turning the AI chatbot into a social media-like platform. The feature allows multiple users to join a single chat, with the AI acting as a guide among participants.
This is OpenAI’s first such initiative, aimed at helping office teams, friends, and families collaborate efficiently. Currently, the feature is available only in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, with global expansion expected in the coming months.
Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has focused on one-on-one AI interactions, but it is now evolving into a social platform. The addition of direct messaging will completely transform the user experience, enabling people to use the platform not just for AI interaction but also for communication and joint work with others. Group chats can include up to 20 members, with private one-on-one threads available within the group that others cannot see. Each participant will have their own profile, username, and photo for easy identification, and users can react to messages with emojis. Group admins will control membership, while individuals can mute notifications or rename the chat.
The feature runs on the GPT-5.1 Auto AI model, ensuring optimal responses for both free and paid subscribers. All key ChatGPT tools—including web search, image generation, file uploads, and sharing—will be accessible within group chats.
