Bolzano: Five German climbers, including a father and his 17-year-old daughter, died after being swept away by an avalanche in Italy’s South Tyrol province on Saturday afternoon.
The victims were part of two separate groups ascending Cima Vertana in the Ortler range at over 3,500 meters when the snowslide hit around 4 p.m. Three were recovered Saturday, with the father and daughter found Sunday after falling 200 meters.
Rescuers, alerted by two nearby hikers, used helicopters and dogs in harsh conditions. The avalanche, possibly triggered by wind and snow buildup despite low risk, highlights persistent dangers in the Alps, where Italy sees high annual fatalities
