US President Donald Trump has cautioned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi against any conflict with Pakistan, emphasizing that war between the two nuclear-armed neighbors must be avoided.
Speaking at a Diwali celebration in the White House, Trump revealed details of a recent phone conversation with Modi, where they discussed trade, regional peace, and key bilateral issues. He noted that trade diplomacy has been instrumental in resolving disputes, stating, “We talked about trade, and about peace. I told him, no wars with Pakistan.”
Trump again took credit for halting the earlier India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025, claiming, “I called both and said if you go to war, no trade with the US. Within 24 hours, they called back.” He highlighted that seven aircraft were downed during the brief escalation and boasted of preventing eight wars overall, mostly through economic leverage.
The discussion also covered energy, with Trump asserting that Modi assured him India would limit its Russian oil purchases to avoid further US tariffs, which currently stand at up to 50% on Indian goods.
Trump praised Modi as a “great person” and “great friend,” underscoring their strong personal rapport. “We have no war with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing,” he added
