The Punjab government has announced that Lahore will get its first tram service starting in February 2026. This step marks an essential development in the city’s public transport system.
Punjab’s Minister for Transport, Bilal Akbar, confirmed the news while speaking to the media. He explained that the tram’s test run had been successful. The service will begin on the route from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura. Each tram will have 270 seats, and the cost of a single tram is estimated at 3 million dollars.
The minister also revealed further plans for the province. A metro train service is being introduced in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. According to him, both the tram and metro projects aim to ease traffic congestion and reduce environmental pollution. These initiatives are expected to provide people with modern, eco-friendly, and affordable means of travel.
It is worth recalling that earlier this year, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz herself took an experimental ride in the country’s first urban electric train, the “Super Autonomous Rapid Transit” (SRT). The test run drew a great deal of attention as it represented Pakistan’s entry into the modern era of urban electric transport.
Maryam Nawaz shared her views after the test journey. She said that the people of Punjab can now look forward to positive news every day. According to her, projects like SRT and the upcoming tram will enhance the beauty of Lahore while also benefiting other cities like Faisalabad and Gujranwala. She emphasized that the government’s focus is not just on infrastructure but also on making everyday life easier and more comfortable for citizens.
The Punjab government highlighted that the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit is not a new concept globally. Similar systems are already running successfully in countries such as Turkey, China, and Abu Dhabi. The SRT train consists of three bogies and has advanced features that make it suitable for urban travel. The latest model can carry up to 320 passengers. Once charged, it can run up to 40 kilometers before requiring another charge.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed that projects like the SRT and tram service are not only about transport convenience. They are also about addressing larger challenges like pollution. By introducing electric trams and metro trains, the government hopes to cut down on smoke-producing vehicles that currently dominate the roads. This shift toward cleaner transportation is expected to make city air healthier and improve the quality of life for millions.
The announcement of the tram service in Lahore, along with metro projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, signals a major transformation in Punjab’s transport landscape. These projects reflect the government’s commitment to modernizing urban mobility while protecting the environment. For the people, it means easier travel, less traffic stress, and a cleaner future.
