Punjab has approved a new admission policy for public and private medical and dental colleges.
The policy makes the MDCAT test mandatory for admission to government medical colleges. For children of overseas Pakistanis, the MDCAT fee has been set at 10,000 dollars.
The approval came during a special meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The meeting focused on key reforms and decisions in the health sector.
According to the policy, when a candidate’s name appears on the list of a private medical college, they will first deposit one-third of the fee with the University of Health Sciences (UHS). After the release of the final merit list, UHS will transfer the amount to the concerned college. The student will then pay the remaining fee directly to that medical or dental college.
The meeting also discussed postgraduate medical training. It was agreed that doctors completing training in private hospitals will be required to perform mandatory service. Trainee doctors will be assigned specializations in private medical colleges based on the demand for specialists in different fields.
Maryam Nawaz expressed happiness over the first successful angioplasty in Sahiwal. She welcomed the beginning of cardiac surgeries at the new cardiac center. She directed Mayo Hospital to design a transparent and reliable system for treatment at the Ablation Center. She also instructed health officials to ensure maximum relief for cancer patients.

Maryam Nawaz stressed that no poor patient in Punjab hospitals should have to spend money for treatment. She said her goal was to provide treatment to every cancer patient in the province.
